تنتشر هذه السلالة في مناطق شمال أفريقيا وشرق البحر المتوسط والجزيرة العربية. ويعيش القط البري في المناطق الجبلية الصخرية وشبه الصحراوية، والغابات.
أكبر قليلاً من الهر الأليف، ويزن حوالي 7 كجم. يبلغ طول جسمه حوالي 50 سم، وذيله 30 سم، وجمجمته حوالي 9 سم. الذكر أكبر حجما من الأنثى. يغطي جسمه فراء قصير يميل الى الأصفر الفاتح. اما الظهر فلونه يختلف ما بين البني الفاتح والزيتي البني. ويغطي البطن لون ابيض، وتظهر أذنا الهر من الأعلى بلون الصدأ وأحيانا باللونين الرمادي والبني الداكن، فيما الوجه ملون. يتميز فراء الهر البري بنعومته وغزارته، وهو أكثر نعومة على البطن. أما الأقدام فبنية اللون من الأعلى. ولا يغطي الشعر الطويل كعب قدم الهر البري كباقي أفراد جنسه. له عينان كبيرتان، وخدان عريضان، وشفتان خاليتان من الشعر، وأذنان طويلتان مثلثتا الشكل وموجهتان الى الأعلى.
عند تعرضه للخطر يختبىء في خنادق الثعالب وعلى الأشجار التي يتسلقها عادة بمهارة فائقة وسرعة مميزة. يمكنه الركض بسرعة تصل الى 30 كلم في الساعة، وهو يحافظ على هذه السرعة لمدة لا بأس بها. انفصلت هذه السلالة التي تعرف بالأفريقية عن السلالة الأوروبية قبل ما يزيد على 130 ألف سنة، ويعتقد بأن هذه السلالة هي أصل القطط المستأنسة التي يعود تاريخ استئناسها في المنطقة الى حوالي عشرة آلاف سنة.
فترة الحمل عند أنثى الهر البري حوالي 65 يوماً، ويرجح انها تحمل أكثر من مرة وتضع بين واحد وستة من الادراص، وفي معظم الحالات أربعة. تهتم الأم بصغارها فتطعمها وتدربها على أمور الصيد كي تتمكن من الاعتماد على نفسها. يعمر الهر البري ما يقارب العشرين عاما.
يصطاد الهر البري خلال الليل فقط، ويتغذى على القوارض والطيور والزواحف والحشرات.
It inhabits rocky mountainous areas, semi-arid regions, and forests.
The wild cat is larger than the domestic cat with a body length of 50 cm, a tail of about 30 cm, a skull about 9 cm long, and a weight of about 7kgs. Male is larger than female. It has short fur except on the pads of its paws, similar to other cat species. Its coat is generally light yellow, and the fur on its back ranges from light to olive brown with a white belly. The color of its ear tips and face resembles the color of rust but can also be either grey or dark brown. Its fur is smooth and dense, smoothest of all on the abdomen. The upper parts of its legs are brown. The wild cat has large eyes, broad cheeks, and hairless lips. Its ears are long, triangular, and upward pointing.
The wild cat is strictly nocturnal. When faced with danger, it hides in holes and climbs trees with great skill and at remarkable speed. It can run at speeds of up to 30 km/ph and can maintain this pace for some time. Females can breed more than once a year and after a gestation period of about 65 days they give birth to between one and six young, but there are usually four kittens in a litter. The mother takes care of the young, feeds them, and teaches them to hunt; they remain with her until they can feed themselves independently. The life span of the wild cat is about twenty years. Wild cats hunt at night and feed on rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects.
